The Agincourt Ribbon Reefs are long narrow reefs located along the very Outer Edge of the Great Barrier Reef, flushed out at every tide by clear oceanic water welling up from the Coral Sea Trench nearby.
Coral thrives in this clear water, creating spectacular gardens and a huge variety of marine life. These pristine reefs are opposite the Daintree Rainforest, well North of any agricultural run-off from cultivated areas, and provide the best possible diving opportunities.
All the sites 'Poseidon' (the dive boat that we use) visit on a daily basis are selected for the deeper walls and drop-offs preferred by scuba divers and both the adjacent shallower coral gardens favoured by snorkellers.
Sea Temperatures
Range from 23.2°C in July to 28.7°C in February. On average the water temperature here is 27°C so a 3-5mm knee length wet suit should be sufficient which we are happy to provide you with on the boat. However if you do feel the cold more than others maybe you should consider a 3 to 5mm full length wet suit.
- Jan - March: Generally considered our monsoon time with amazing feeding and marine life action following the breeding season.
- April - September: Our winter, which can offer great visibility and beautiful weather but sometimes strong winds.
- October - December: Has wonderful weather with lots happening under the water as most coral reef species breed during this time.
Coral Spawning
A most sort after event usually during November is the Coral Spawning. Also described as "sex on the reef"! This simultaneous mass spawning of corals was first scientifically observed in 1981. This event usually only happens at night and requires several contributing factors for the coral to spawn which can make it very difficult to predict specific dates.
Minke Whales & Humpback Whales
During the months of May to August whales visit the Great Barrier Reef. These spectacular creatures migrate to our tropical waters to mate and give birth to their young.
The Humpback Whales are sometimes more commonly sighted breaching in the distance and from the reef while our dive boat 'Poseidon' is moored. The Humpback Whales are generally a more timid than the Dwarf Minke Whales but put on a more spectacular show for everybody.
The experience of interacting with whales is something not to be missed and our dive boat has 1 of a handful of strictly regulated permits to swim with the Minke Whales.
